Brad Pitt Calls New Orleans Home

header_120407_04.jpg

Brad Pitt's been getting a lot of press this week, for the launch of his "Make It Right" campaign in New Orleans. Brad and Angelina are clearly a couple who are both interested in using their celebrity to raise awareness for international humanitarian projects, and Brad says that his pet project to help rebuild the 9th Ward hits particularly close to home. He recently expressed the sentiment that he feels as if New Orleans is his family's home, stating, "We're a nomadic family but have a home base here." The pink tents are supposed to represent homes that will be built and Brad said he hoped to have families living in them by the end of the summer. I rather like those festive little pink tents. I wonder what they're doing with them when they're done...

He's not just stopping with the Lower 9th - he's also looking at projects in Gentilly and Broadmoor.

The 9th Ward is going to flood again. Why are these two "environmentally conscious" POSERS building in a below-sealevel floodplain ? DUH!

Good for Brad...doing something he likes-architecture and helping AMERICANS!

I'd be interested to hear what the people in New Orleans are feeling about his efforts...his heart seems to be in the right place with this venture. Doesn't seem the government is capable of helping-didn't I just hear that they are booting people from the FEMA trailers-with a "times up-get out-good luck?"

When the 9th Ward floods again, I hope Brad and Angie are right in the middle of it. It's the only way to get anyone to care, apparently.

When is Brad going to get rid of that ridiculous-looking hat? It makes him look like an idiot.

You have to go to www.makeitrightnola.org to check out the houses. They're nice they're built on stilts high above ground with safety precautions in preparation for another flooding. It's neat. You can also donate to build a house for a family to having filters for faucets installed.

The people in New Orleans - including myself - truly appreciate and admire the work Brad and Angelina are doing. They have embraced the city and the city has returned the feeling. Everyone should know that they live hear without fanfair and do not seek praise for their efforts. Most of the time, you just see them enjoying the city with their family and being LEFT ALONE - which is why celebrities actually like New Orleans.

And yes, they are building flood control that is supposed to work the next time, for the entire city including the 9th ward. No community is safe from natural disasters....

damn, brad gets stupider every time he opens his mouth. NOLA is his "family's" home base because they bought a mansion and lived in it for a couple of months. And "Rick," you're full of crap because they spend VERY little time in NOLA.

Lets see, Brad Pitt, is putting up 5 million dollars of his own, investing in building of homes that cost 150,000.00 each.

Ok. Now, when his little Make it Right campaign goes to sell these homes...exactly how much are they plan on selling them for? 150,000.00? Or more?

It's called REAL ESTATE investment people. They probably got the land DIRT cheap, and will in turn make a NICE heavenly profit on all of it. Brad and his Make it Right campaign, certainly WILL not be just giving these homes to needy people. These homes will have to be purchased by people who can get a mortgage. Albeit it might be a low interest mortgage, like habitat for humanity does.

This is not Charity on the part of Brad Pitt, but a real estate investment. He is also asking for donations from communities, churches, persons etc. Nice little racket.

I live in uptown New Orleans, and really, no part of the city is completely safe from flooding. These houses look as though they're designed to manage or withstand moderate flooding.

Oh, and the land? It's not cheap here. Property appraisals have been going insane since Katrina. Land in the 9th Ward isn't cheap, and most can't afford to rebuild because of skyrocketing insurance costs.

Nomads or not, Pitt and Jolie are a welcome part of our community. Unlike all of the political doublespeak we're subjected to on a daily basis from our local and state leaders, these two dove right into finding effective, reasonable ways to help with gulf coast recovery. Their personal lives aside, what they've done here has been remarkable. If only we could clone Drew Brees (QB of the Saints, and a huge proponent of local charity work), Brad Pitt, et al., this city would have a tremendously bright future.

Moreover, as I mentioned in my first post, he included Gentilly (New Orleans East) and Broadmoor (closer to Mid-City and uptown) in his statements about Make It Right NOLA yesterday, according to the Times-Picayune. I think this demonstrates his awareness of the fact that more than just the 9th Ward was destroyed in 2005.

and that $5 mil he's giving away is called a TAX DEDUCTION. when you make the kind of money Brangelina makes you need tax write-offs.

I just wonder who is going to be able to afford his $150,000 dollar homes...

Let me respond:

1. With the average house price pegged at between $100,000 and $174,000, planners expect participants to cover a portion of the cost with insurance and Road Home proceeds. But they expect that most homeowners will fall about $70,000 short of paying off their new homes. To fill the gap, Make It Right plans to offer forgivable loans of as much as $100,000. Applicants must have owned a home or lot in the Lower 9th Ward before Hurricane Katrina.

2. They have not just lived in the "mansion" for months. Last year they bought a house in the french quarter and have been here as often as their schedules allow - just ask the teachers where their kids attend school....

oh nevermind keep thinking they have not set down roots here, it keeps the gawkers and paps out of New Orleans. we all know the truth and they have already done more then most...

Just more bullshit from these idiots. My home in New Orleans was lost and I rebuilt on my own, that's what people do unless your lazy welfare asses just sit back and wait on others to do for you. Which is the majority of N.O.

And I agree, REAL ESTATE INVESTEMENT is what they're doing and nothing else.

I'd like to suck the pants right off him.

I appreciate the effort; however, 5 million dollars is a tax write-off for Brad Pitt, and that's a whole lot of money to be investing in a place that could EASILY flood again. New Orleans is about 8 feet below sea level and would be completely under water if it weren't for the pumps and levee system they have. Unfortunately, that levee and pump system is also what's weighing the city down at a faster rate. So it's a catch-22. There's a reason why our government isn't totally interested in re-investing in the area. I wouldn't re-invest in that area. I'd re-invest in surrounding areas and help people to relocate.

Hooray! People here are not the idiots that the Pittiful and his skank think they are! I am so sick of their insulting "causes; foreign kids, nola, (she tried awareness in Iraq but they laughed at her, literally!" And as for her foreign adoptions they have now closed the doors due to her lies and scamming the agencies to buy babies, so she only hurt those children left there. Hey if he sold t-shirts that said, "Me (cheating, liar, idiot, aging, wannabe architect) and my ho and our litter need money!" I might donate!

Those two Liberal lunatics need to fess up to their unintelligent ideas and stop feeling guilty for being multi-millionaires. The people that Pitt was talked in to helping with his very large donation are the same fools that during a cat 5 huricanne sat on their front porches and watched as a wall of water deluged the entire neighborhood. These people did not even attempt to leave the area. They remained in the flooded homes depending on someone to come to their rescue.
As they do in most aspects of their lives the people of the 9th Ward community are totally dependent on government handouts. They actually stayed in their flooded houses because they had no transportation out of the city. They were just sitting there waiting for someone to pull up in front of their house and load their belongings and offer them a meal while they are transported away from the danger. Now that in a whole really bothers me.
Getting to the point, If Pitt wants to help the people of New Orleans by rebuilding the 9th Ward thats his prerogative. He surely is not going to miss the five million he has shelled out on this worthless project.
In my opinion if Pitt really new this city like he says he does he would know that the people that he is trying to help are animals. Wanting something for nothing. Mark my words and the words of the intelligent people of this wonderfull city. As soon as the new houses are available there will be jealousy and contempt within the 9th Ward community. One family wanting to know why they were passed over for the family down the street. I hope these homes come with draperies because Winn-Dixie is having a sale on 25' rolls of aluminum foil.

Libertarian Gestapo you are pitiful with a capital P. You are the one that sounds like an animal...By the way, that comment was very dumb!!! Stop being, so judgemental!!!

I'm more disgusted at all of you people who keep claiming that new orleans should not be rebuilt. Do you guys feel the same about areas in california that are prone to wild fires and earthquakes? What about the entire midwest area that floods EVERY time the ice melts and the rivers swell. Or how about Virginia, with the recent tornados? Face it, no matter where you live there are dangers from mother nature. I lost everything I owned in Katrina---completely due to poor engineering on the part of our government. No, I did not live in the 9th ward. My neighborhood had NEVER flooded before. If you have never experienced something like this, you really have no understanding of the thoughts and feelings of people who have been through it. SO my advice---KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!
