Pretend it's 1985 and you still care. Reports from backstage at last night's benefit at NYC's Hetrick-Martin Institute reveal exactly what Cyndi Lauper does to get that Betty Boop voice she's always sporting. She sucks the helium from balloons! What the eff? For real? That's a lot of balloons she must have gone through. Wouldn't that affect brain function after awhile? Cyndi was so hot when I saw her this past summer on the True Colors tour. The benefit was for the Harvey Milk High School for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. A witness reported that before she went on, Cyndi "sucked the gas out of two helium balloons". She also pissed off the high school's youth choir by repeatedly referring to them as "transgender". One member of the choir stated "we're not [bleep]ing trannies!" Someone hasn't absorbed the spirit and purpose of their high school, apparently.

If that were the case they'd have to wheel a tank of helium out onto the stage and we'd see Cyndi doing a performance reminiscent of Dennis Hopper's character in Blue Velvet". Helium doesn't stay in anyone's lungs for more than a couple minutes at a time while talking. Breathing is 80% of singing so the helium would be expelled faster. There's no way she could do a set without us all knowing and seeng her pass out on stage

Cyndi Lauper did the Today Show few years ago and explained this exercise. It has something to do with exercising the pharnyx which is above the larnyx or something technichal like that. I think it was from a morning show a few years ago when she sang shine and the host asked her what the balloon was for that she was using before her performance. Cyndi doesn't need helium to prove her talent. She learned this exercise from her vocal great vocal teacher Katie Agresta.

Stupid article and anybody who believes it is even dumber. Have you ever sucked a helium balloon to make your voice sound funny? How long does that last? Maybe 20 - 30 seconds at most. Cyndi would have to have a helium tank strapped to her back with a mask on to make that effect endure a whole concert. Cyndi's squeaky speaking voice was something she cultivated until MAYBE 1986 and then dropped it. Watch any interview on Youtube from after 86 and you'll see. And, how dare a GLB choir (singing undoubtedly as a representative of marginalized people) get so bent out of shape about being called "tranny's" (if that's even true). Get over yourselves and practice what you preach. Be more accepting.

The balloon excercise is to strengthen your diaphragm. There are very few artists that have the vocal control that Cyndi does. It's very obvious that she does some intense excercises to maintain her voice as she does.

Cyndi is beautiful. I've been infatuated since I first saw her in the "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" video in the early 80's. Believe me, I don't care about her politics, beliefs or anything. If she'd have me I marry her tomorrow. (I guess I'd have to get divorced first.) Not only is she beautiful and classy, she has so much character you can see the energy flowing from her.
